ਹੇ (ਮੇਰੇ) ਮਨ! ਜੇਹੜਾ (ਇਹ) ਸਰੀਰ ਤੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਮਝ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਅਤੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਮੰਨ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ,
That body, which you believe to be your own, and your beautiful home and spouse
ਇਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਭੀ ਤੇਰਾ (ਸਦਾ ਨਿਭਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਸਾਥੀ) ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸੋਚ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਵੇਖ ਲੈ ।੧।
- none of these is yours to keep. See this, reflect upon it and understand. ||1||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ! ਤੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ ?
So why are you so anxious, O mortal?
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਅਲੱਖ ਤੇ ਅਚਰਜ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਮਰ ।੫।
Meditate, O Nanak, on God, the invisible, the wonderful! ||5||
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਦਿਨ ਰਾਤ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਸੋਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ (ਮੇਰਾ ਕੀਹ ਬਣੇਗਾ?) ਮਾੜਿਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੇਰਾ ਬਹਿਣ-ਖਲੋਣ ਹੈ,
The company I keep is wretched and low, and I am anxious day and night;
ਖੋਟ ਮੇਰਾ (ਨਿੱਤ-ਕਰਮ) ਹੈ; ਮੇਰਾ ਜਨਮ (ਭੀ) ਨੀਵੀਂ ਜਾਤਿ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਹੈ ।੧।
my actions are crooked, and I am of lowly birth. ||1||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ (ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੀ) ਰਾਤ ਬੀਤ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,
Thinking and planning, the night of the life is passing away.
ਮਨੁੱਖ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੇ ਹੀ ਅਨੇਕਾਂ ਰੰਗ ਤਮਾਸ਼ੇ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Thinking of the many pleasures of Maya, the mortal never remembers the Lord, the Sustainer of the earth. ||1||Pause||
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ!) ਉਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੂੰ ਕੋਈ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਵਿਆਪਦਾ (ਸਾਡੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਉਹ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹੈ) ਸਾਨੂੰ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੋਹਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ।
He has no anxiety, so I have no cares.
ਉਸ ਉਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਸਾਡੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਭੀ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਏ?
He has no stain, so I have no pollution.
ਕੋਝੇ ਝਗੜਾਲੂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਮਤ ਨੂੰ ਸੱਚਾ ਸਾਬਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਬਹਿਸਾਂ ਕਰਨ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ, ਅਸਲੀਅਤ ਲੱਭਣ ਲਈ) ਆਪਣੇ ਦਿਲ ਵਿਚ ਸੋਚ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰ ਕਿ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤੇ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ (ਇਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਕਿਥੋਂ ਪੈਦਾ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ, (ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਹੋਰ) ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਰਸਤੇ ਤੋਰੇ;
Where have the Hindus and Muslims come from? Who put them on their different paths?
(ਜਦੋਂ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਮਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਬੰਦੇ ਰੱਬ ਨੇ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਕਿਸ ਨਾਲ ਵਿਤਕਰਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ? ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਜਾਂ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਹੋਣ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੀ) ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਬਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਲੱਭਾ ਤੇ ਕਿਸ ਨੇ ਦੋਜ਼ਕ? (ਭਾਵ, ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਮੁਸਲਮਾਨ ਅਖਵਾਉਣ ਨਾਲ ਬਹਿਸ਼ਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ, ਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਦੋਜ਼ਕ ਵਿਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਪਈਦਾ) ।੧।
Think of this, and contemplate it within your mind, O men of evil intentions. Who will go to heaven and hell? ||1||
ਹੇ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ! (ਸਾਰੇ ਜਗਤ ਦਾ) ਮਾਲਕ ਇੱਕ ਰੱਬ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੀ ਰੱਬ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਭੀ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਤੂੰ ਸੋਚ-ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕੇ ਤੱਕਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ।
O Qazi, the One Lord is within you, but you do not behold Him by thought or contemplation.
ਸ਼ਰਹ ਵਿਚ ਕਮਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਕਾਜ਼ੀ! ਤੂੰ (ਇਸ ਭੇਤ ਨੂੰ) ਸਮਝਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਤੇਰੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਅਜਾਈਂ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You do not care for others, you are a religious fanatic, and your life is of no account at all. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਆਪਣੇ ਸਦਾ ਕਾਇਮ ਰਹਿਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਧਿਆਨ ਧਰੀ ਰੱਖਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ ।
Meditate forever on Your Lord.
(ਸੰਸਾਰ ਦੀ) ਉਸ ਚੀਜ਼ ਦਾ ਕੀਹ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜੇਹੜੀ ਛੇਤੀ ਹੀ ਨਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਣ ਵਾਲੀ ਹੈ? ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Why should I feel worry or anxiety, when I am here for only a short time. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! (ਖਸਮ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਾਹ ਪੈਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਦੀ ਦਸ਼ਾ) ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਫੁਰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਡਰ-ਸਹਮ ਵਾਪਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਡਰਦੀ ਹਾਂ (ਕਿ ਕਿਤੇ ਮੇਰਾ ਭੀ ਇਹ ਹਾਲ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ ।
O mother, I hear of death, and think of it, and I am filled with fear.
ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਸਦਾ ਇਹ ਤਾਂਘ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਮਾਲਕ-ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਪਈ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਮੇਰ-ਤੇਰ ਗਵਾ ਦਿਆਂ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਤਿਆਗ ਦਿਆਂ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Renouncing 'mine and yours' and egotism, I have sought the Sanctuary of the Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||
ਆਪਣੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਮੰਡਲ ਨੂੰ ਭਾਂਡਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਕਤਾਰ ਬਣਾ, ਇਸ ਭਾਂਡਸਾਲ ਵਿਚ ਇਸ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਸੌਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਪਾ ।
Make understanding and contemplation your warehouse, and in that warehouse, store the Lord's Name.
ਇਹ ਨਾਮ-ਵਣਜ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਸਤਸੰਗੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲ ਕੇ ਤੂੰ ਭੀ ਹਰੀ-ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਵਣਜ ਕਰ । ਇਸ ਵਣਜ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਖੱਟੀ ਮਿਲੇਗੀ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਖਿੜਾਓ ।੨।
Deal with the Lord's dealers, earn your profits, and rejoice in your mind. ||2||
ਹੇ ਮੂਰਖ! ਤੂੰ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ (ਤਾਂ) ਸਿਮਰਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ
The fool does not chant the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਕੇ) ਮੁੜ ਮੁੜ ਹੋਰ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਣ ਦਾ ਤੈਨੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਲਾਭ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ? ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
So what does he think of, over and over again? ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ!) ਜਾਣਦੇ ਬੁੱਝਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਭੀ ਅਸੀ ਕਮਲੇ ਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਬਣੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਾਂ, ਅਸਾਡੀ ਉਮਰ ਦੇ ਦਿਹਾੜੇ (ਮਾਇਆ ਦੀਆਂ ਹੀ) ਚੰਗੀਆਂ ਮੰਦੀਆਂ ਵਿਚਾਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਗੁਜ਼ਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ,
We do not know what we need to know, and we have become insane. We do not consider what we should consider; our days are passing away.
ਅਸਾਡੀ ਕਾਮ-ਵਾਸ਼ਨਾ ਵਧ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਵਿਚਾਰ-ਸ਼ਕਤੀ ਘਟ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ, ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ਦੀ ਅਸਾਨੂੰ ਕਦੇ ਸੋਚ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਫੁਰੀ ਕਿ ਅਸਾਡੀ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡੀ ਲੋੜ ਕੀਹ ਹੈ ।
Our passions are strong, and our discriminating intellect is weak; we have no access to the supreme objective. ||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਦਰਸਨ ਦੀ ਬਰਕਤਿ ਨਾਲ) ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੀਆਂ ਚਿੰਤਾਂ ਤੇ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਬਚ ਗਿਆ ਹਾਂ, (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਗ਼ਮ ਮੁੱਕ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਲੋਭ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ।
I was anxious, and now I am free of anxiety; I was worried, and now I am free of worry; my grief, greed and emotional attachments are gone.
ਗੁਰੂ ਦੀ) ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਲ (ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰੋਂ) ਹਉਮੈ ਆਦਿਕ ਰੋਗ ਮਿਟ ਗਏ ਹਨ, ਮੈਂ ਜਮ-ਰਾਜ ਤੋਂ ਭੀ ਕੋਈ ਡਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦਾ ।੩।
By His Grace, I am cured of the disease of egotism, and the Messenger of Death no longer terrifies me. ||3||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਜਨਮ ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਮੈਂ ਕੋਈ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ, ਇਸ ਵਾਸਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਡਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।
Obtaining this human incarnation, I have done no good deeds; this makes me very afraid!
ਮੈਂ (ਆਪਣੀ) ਜਿੰਦ ਵਿਚ (ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ) ਇਹੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਕਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਲ, ਬਚਨ ਨਾਲ, ਕਰਮ ਨਾਲ (ਕਦੇ ਭੀ) ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਿਹਾ ।੧।
In thought, word and deed, I have not sung the Lord's Praises; this thought worries my mind. ||1||
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਜਿਸ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਨੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਸੰਕਟ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲਿਆ, ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਮਰਦਿਆਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਮਨ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, the mind and body find peace; the thought of duality is dispelled.
ਉਸ ਦਾ ਤਨ ਸੁਖੀ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ (ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਯਾਦ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ) ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਸਭ ਚਿੰਤਾ-ਫ਼ਿਕਰ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਗਿਆ ।੧।
Nanak takes the support of the Lord of the World, the Lord of the Universe, the Destroyer of troubles. ||1||
ਹੇ ਮਾਂ! ਜਿਹੜੇ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਸਦਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਮਝੀ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ (ਜਦੋਂ ਮੌਤ ਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਧਨ-ਪਦਾਰਥ) ਇਕ ਖਿਨ ਵਿਚ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।
That wealth, which he believes to be his own, in an instant, belongs to another.
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ! ਆਖ—ਉਸ ਵੇਲੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੇ ਮਨ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਾ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਕਦੇ ਭੀ ਨਾਹ ਕੀਤੀ ।੨।੨।
Says Nanak, this still really bothers my mind - I never sang the Praises of the Lord. ||2||2||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਆਪਣੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖਾ ਸੁਭਾਉ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਤੂੰ ਕੀਹ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
What do you think, with your human understanding?
ਸਰਬ-ਵਿਆਪਕ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਦੇ ਦਿਲ ਦੀ ਜਾਣਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਹੈ ।
The All-knowing Lord is the Searcher of Hearts.
ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਹੋਰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜੀਆਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਾਂ? ਮੈਂ ਹਰੇਕ ਸੋਚ ਵਿਸਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਹੈ ।
Now what should I think? I have given up thinking.
ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਆਪਣਾ ਨਾਮ ਬਖ਼ਸ਼, ਮੈਂ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ ।(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਕੁਝ ਉਹ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
You do whatever You wish to do. Please bless me with Your Name - I am a sacrifice to You. ||1||Pause||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! (ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ) ਤੰੂ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹ ਸੋਚਾਂ ਸੋਚਦਾਂ ਹੈਂ? ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕੀਹ ਉਪਾਵ ਚਿਤਵਦਾ ਹੈਂ? ਤੂੰ ਹੋਰ ਕਿਹੜੇ ਹੀਲੇ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
What are you so worried about? What are you thinking? What have you tried?
(ਵੇਖ,) ਜਿਸ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਦਾ ਸਹਾਈ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਆਪ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ, ਦੱਸ, ਕਿਸ ਦੀ ਪਰਵਾਹ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ? ।੧।
Tell me - the Lord of the Universe - who controls Him? ||1||
